One of the elements that drew me to the campus was its motto and the three pillars of faith, knowledge, and service. At the university, this statement is more than words; it is reflected in actions that benefit both students and the wider community. One expression of that commitment is a series of service events held throughout the year, culminating in a campus-wide day of service called One Day, One Dog. Many of these engagement efforts are shaped through the strategic planning of Keyua McElveen, Director of Co-Curricular and Community Experience.
Through initiatives such as a community garden, farmers market, food pantry, clothes closet, engagement spaces/activities, and community partnerships, Keyua helps guide students through experiences that strengthen both academic and personal growth. I have seen students experience meaningful turning points as they work with community partners through experiential projects, discovering their strengths and bridging the gap between learning, application, and purpose.
This conversation reflects Keyua’s concept of ‘graceful leadership’ and highlights an intentional journey from classroom to community. Have a seat and join the conversation as we go Beyond the Syllabus.
