What happens when purpose meets purpose? The answer is the ideal next guest for your podcast. I have had the privilege of hearing Dr. Benjamin Sammons, our university chaplain, speak at several campus events. His words always make a lasting impression, skillfully combining biblical proverbs with real-life scenarios involving students, faculty, and staff. This blend leaves audiences in deep reflection. Dr. Sammons communicates with a calm tenor, and his presence brings a sense of peace.
By chance, Dr. Sammons and I found ourselves on a committee responsible for revising materials that needed a new tagline. After much discussion, the word “purpose” emerged as a central theme. Although it was ultimately set aside, the concept lingered in my mind as I considered launching my podcast. Purpose, whether defined by function or a divine calling, serves as a guiding force, like a cardinal direction amid life’s shifting winds. It is about listening to that quiet voice or feeling the innate urge to act.
In the world of higher education, much attention is given to high-stakes exams, competitive GPAs, and graduation regalia—those stoles and cords. Yet, after all the ceremonies are over, a deeper question remains: Who are you? What guides you along your journey? As members of the student “village,” our responsibility is to help students see the bigger picture and recognize their lasting impact on the world. This is the foundation of our conversation with Chaplain Sammons.
